After working with Marques Houston and Omarion, Chris Ball is ready to blaze his own path to superstardom. Terrell spoke with the rising star about his album, his plans and what makes him stand out.
Terrell: What’s going on Chris?
Chris Ball: Hey, wassup Terrell, how you been, what‘s good?
Terrell: I’m good, and you?
Chris Ball: Just working hard man, you know?
Terrell: I like the single.
Chris Ball: Oh yeah? Thanks man, I really appreciate the love and support.
Terrell: No problem at all. So, to start things off, talk to me about how Chris Ball found his way into the music industry.
Chris Ball: Man, you know what? Chris Ball has been finding his way into the music industry every since he was like, 9 yrs. Old. I actually started out in this industry carrying bags and being on the road with Immature back in the 90’s. And every since then, I’ve just been hustling. I went from carrying bags, to being a dancer, to being a road manager for Omarion and Marques Houston the past few years. And it was like I finally got tired of seeing everybody get money and receive that respect and that stardom and that encouraged me to make the decision to make my way to the forefront.
Terrell: Ok, cool. Now your current single “Wifey” kind of has this Hip-Hip/R&B feel to it. Is that how you would describe your overall sound?
Chris Ball: Well, I actually haven’t really come up with a name for my sound …just yet. For example, I started to call it Rhythm and Rap, but it’s so much more than that that I’m trying to get across, because I’m an entertainer. I mean my musical background goes from listening to NWA, to listening to Danny Gibson. So, I got a bit of a versatile ear and I try to show that in my music and make it Rhythm and Rap with a little bit of Rock appeal to it as well. You know I got the Mohawk jumping off, the leather jacket, and I got a record with James Blunt that was sampled. So, this is a whole different genre, and a whole different movement as a whole, you know?
Terrell: I feel you. So what’s the response been like so far, from the people hearing your new single?
Chris Ball: I get a lot of good feedback from the ladies, of course. The ladies really seem to like the record. They like to hit me up and ask about the “Wifey” and do I have a wifey and if not, am I looking for one, and that sort of thing, you know? Surprisingly enough man, the fellas been diggin’ it also man, which is a good thing. They’re like “Man, the beat is hard man, the song goes hard…” So, I guess it’s definitely something the fellas feel like they can put in the CD changer when they’re in the car with they’re lady or laying’ down or whatever. It has a real smooth groove to it, so I’ve been getting a lot of good feedback from the public about the record.
Terrell: That’s what’s up. Of course, I have to get you to tell me about your upcoming debut album “The Well-Known Stranger”.
Chris Ball: Well, “The Well-Known Stranger” album was originally suppose to come out this fall, but it’s hard out here for all of the struggling independent artists. So right now we’re pushing for a early Fall 2008 release and I’m just hustling’ off of this current single right now. My next single is called “Kinky Girl” and it was produced by Lil’ Jon. I have to say that these two singles, they don’t really describe everything that Chris Ball the artist represents since I kind of went the safe route and coming into the industry with music that people can relate to and that people can understand for now, then I’m going to hit you with what Chris Ball is really about as an artist. My music and my opinion is so innovative and so different in it’s own genre, that I don’t want to scare people off before I get them in my clutch so to speak, you know what I’m saying? I want to secure my web and then I want to feed you this good music.
Terrell: Ok, that makes sense. Now with the material that you’ve recorded thus far, what song sticks out to you the most?
Chris Ball: Well, I love all the song so far, but one record that sticks out to me the most is a record called “No Missionary”. Hint, hint the title……
Terrell: (laughs) Uh oh….
Chris Ball: (laughs) Yeah, and that’s exactly what it’s about. But, when you hear the beat to the song, you would never think that the record was going to be about that particular topic, you know? It’s a real feel good record, it’s grown up, it’s produced phenomenally, even though it’s an edgy topic, you know?
Terrell: Ok, cool. So who is in Chris Ball’s I-Pod these days…who you feeling right about now?
Chris Ball: Man…..Everybody from Andre 3000, to Kanye West….the Bleeding Love girl……
Terrell: Leona Lewis….
Chris Ball: Yeah….She’s sick…….I’d love to work with Snoop since we both from the west coast and he’s more than a rapper to me. He has a cool swagger and personality too, man.
Terrell: That’s what’s up. Alright Chris, I appreciate you talking with me sir…..
Chris Ball: No problem man, I appreciate the support man and tell RoJay I said “What’s up?”
Terrell: Alright, I will. We’ll be talking again soon.
Chris Ball: Oh yeah, without a doubt. Take care Terrell.
Terrell: You too. Peace.
Chris Ball: One.
