MiddleChild spoke with famed choreographer Dave Scott about his work on the upcoming release, “Step Up 2: The Streets” due in February 2008.

MiddleChild: What’s going on with ya man? How are you?

Dave Scott: Oh I’m good. Just working as usual.

MiddleChild: Long day huh?

Dave Scott: Oh Yea. You know.

MiddleChild: That’s what it do. Well I won’t hold you long. We’ll get right into this thing. So you are working on this new film “Step Up 2: The Streets”. Tell me how involved you are with the project.

Dave Scott: I’m basically very involved. From the concepts to the ideas to everything. This one is a little bit different. It’s more like more crews and more cranks. There are more cranks that the crews can do. With the main crew in the movie, I had to build their whole identity with the dance and then climax at the end with this big dramatic dance sequence.

MiddleChild: Alright. Well I’m a sucker for dance films, so tell me how you feel this one will stand out from all of the other dance movies that everyone has grown to love over the years?

Dave Scott: The difference between this one from the ones like “Stomp The Yard” and “You Got Served” is the intensity with the hip hop, with the aggression. It has that and it has the excitement in it, but what’s going to make it stand out is it has the up to date feel and it has the sexiness going on. So you have the things that you can relate to. Like the youtube and the things like that we all relate to. Plus I don’t know if you’ve seen the new sidekick commercial when they all are out and they end up in the grocery store and they synchronize their watches and they all go crazy at the same time. Those are the kinds of cranks that they do in the movie, but on a bigger scale. So it’s fun and something that everybody is going to want to be apart of no matter what age and it has a lot more energy than “Step Up” had.

MiddleChild: How challenging is it for you to stay super current and ahead of the game at the same time?

Dave Scott: It’s not hard at all because I keep my ear to the streets. When something new comes out I wanna know. I wanna feel it. I wanna be a part of it. I wanna know where it came from. I wanna do it and take it to the next level.

MiddleChild: When you get tapped to do the choreography for projects like this, where do you draw your inspiration from?

Dave Scott: I get a feel of it from traveling already. I teach all over the place. When I get a project, I try and make that project stand out on it’s own. Try and tell a story on it’s own and set it’s own trend. If you follow a certain trend it’ll only be hype to a certain amount of people. So yea, I got the new hot stuff from Memphis and then everybody in Memphis will be hype, but everybody else would be wondering what that is. So I started to do something that make everybody be like “wow, I need to bring this to my town.”

MiddleChild: Of course there are many choreographers from Fatima to Devyne Stephens, but what makes Dave Scott, “Dave Scott”?

Dave Scott: I don’t know. I just like to hit hard. I like to bring different things to the table. I’m the type of person where I don’t like to jump on trends. I try and make stuff that blows me away as if I was sitting in the audience. I try and stay true to that and keep it pushing and so far that has worked for me and kept me different.

MiddleChild: Alright. And we can look for this to drop at the top of the year right?

Dave Scott: Yea. It comes out February 14th. Valentines Day. So go see it with your girl. (laughs)

MiddleChild: That’s what’s up. And what’s the best way for your fans to keep in touch with you?

Dave Scott: The best way is through my website. It’s theofficialdavescott.com

MiddleChild: Cool. Well I will link that to this interview also. I love dance films and you get much love from MiddleChild. So it’s on.

Dave Scott: Thank you man. I’m going to keep pushing on as long as people continue to support.

MiddleChild: Well that’s what it is. You get you some rest man.

Dave Scott: I’ll try, but I ain’t going to get none. (laughs)

MiddleChild: I hear you. (laughs) Hold it down.

Dave Scott: You too.
