Lyfe Jennings has been hitting us with the R&B heat for a few years now. He returns with a new single, “Cops Up” and an album on deck for an early 2008 release. MiddleChild caught up with him to discuss his trends, new album and..er..strippers.

Lyfe: RoJay! What’s up boy?

MiddleChild: What’s good? What’s good with you?

Lyfe: Chillin. Just doing my thing. What’s good with you?

MiddleChild: Nothin much man. Grinding as usual. Trying to make it through this day. So what’s up. You got this new album coming for us in February 2008.

Lyfe: March. March 2008.

MiddleChild: Okay. March. And you titled it “Change”, so tell me what that is about.

Lyfe: Well you know. I’m doing some different things man. Hopefully I’m going to impact change and people will see a change in me.

MiddleChild: Alright. And you got the new single out “Cops Up” and it’s a different approach for you. So how did it feel going with this record?

Lyfe: I mean it was definitely different because what I’m starting to see happen is people are starting to associate me with just messages. I mean, I’m much more than that. I wanna be happy sometimes too as we all are.

MiddleChild: But it’s not necessarily a bad thing because much of today’s music don’t have messages. So do you think you kind of kept it out there?

Lyfe: Yea, but I wanna make sure that, you know, everything needs to be done in moderation. You don’t wanna be at like a club or a strip club or something and a person is turned off by you because of what you sing about. Ya know? I was at a strip club before and this girl was like “I can’t believe you’re here!” and I was like “I can’t believe you’re here either!”

MiddleChild: (laughs) Now take these singles! Here these ones. (both laugh) So who did you hook up with for the album.

Lyfe: I got Wyclef. Wyclef actually wrote a song on the album and then I have him on another song on the album. So I got two from Wyclef. I got this joint with T.I. and Lil Wayne on it. Snoop Dogg is on the album. Talib Kweli is on the album. And then I got a couple of producers.

MiddleChild: What’s going to be the record for everybody to watch out for on the album?

Lyfe: Oh! This next track that’s coming. It’s my second single. It’s going to drop in January, so that means it’s probably going to leak late December. It’s me, T.I. and Lil Wayne and the song is called “Brand New”. My baby moms, T.I.’s baby’s moms and Lil Wayne’s baby’s moms, they all run together. They friends. And all of us, we got some money and we didn’t get brand new with them. We still make sure they straight like we straight. So we wrote a song about them. Ya know?

MiddleChild: That’s important. Hold the ones down that held you down for the longest. So who you kind of like vibing to right now in the world of R&B?

Lyfe: Oh. R&B wise…I like that J. Holiday. That ”Bed”. I like what dude brought with that one. I’m waiting on that new Usher man. It’s a lot of these dudes out here that think this is a game out here man and to me man that’s like the top of the food chain. As far as dancing and singing and how they put it together is Usher. Let’s see. Alicia Keys. I love her. She looking real good to me right now. Sounding real good. You know stuff like that. Underground rap.

MiddleChild: That’s what it do. Now are you still onboard to hook up with BET for this World Aids Day event tomorrow?

Lyfe: Well actually I’m not a part of World Aids Day. When I come on I want it to be special. So they doing something special for me where I can come on and have more time rather than just stopping through because the disease don’t stop.

MiddleChild: Okay. I see you. Well the fans can look for the album March 2008. The video just premiered on 106th & Park this week. We can expect the new single in January and your fans can link up with you through myspace, right?

Lyfe: Definitely via myspace or myplace. Either one.

MiddleChild: Got ya. Well we definitely got love for you over at MiddleChild Promotions and we will make sure the fans stay up on you throughout this thing.

Lyfe: Absolutely.

MiddleChild: You have a good day and stay out of trouble.

Lyfe: (laughs) Aight.

MiddleChild: Don’t let them dancers at the strip club get you into any trouble.

Lyfe: (laughs) Fo sho.

MiddleChild: Have a good one.

Lyfe: Aight. One.
