From peaches, to fashion, and most importantly music; Atlanta has a way of breeding a homegrown flavor that no where else can duplicate, and Writer/Singer/Producer, Sean “The Pen” Garrett, is no exception to the standard. For nearly a decade this modern musical phenom has penned the tracks that have unknowingly painted the musical backdrops of urban life. Jamaur of MCP sat down with Garrett to discuss his new name, new musical fame, moving from behind the pen, and of course his hot tracks!

Jamaur: Thank you so much for talking with us today.

Sean Garrett: Oh it’s all good.

Jamaur: So let’s just jump rite into it, in recent years you have emerged as the newest sound behind Hip Hop and R&B Music, penning hot tracks for Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Joe, Kelly Rowland, and even Jo Jo. I think that you are one of the most famous people in the industry-with millions of fans, who might not even know that they are your fans. Talk about what it’s like being the man behind the pen-is it often a struggle being heard more than you are seen?

Garrett: Yeah, it’s always a challenge. People like M.L.K, Malcom X, and some of the greats are often faced with overcoming diversity and becoming good at one thing, and then showing that they are good at another. Some people aren’t ready but you have to listen to God, jump out the box, and go for it; and then they’ll be like, “I knew he could do it.”

Jamaur: With penning such hot tracks as Chris Brown’s “Wall to Wall,” and the latest single “Get Me Bodied” from Beyonce’s Multi Million Selling second disk ‘B’Day;’ how do you top yourself? Do you often find it hard to out do the lat hot track which you cranked out? What’s your formula?

Garrett: To be honest, my formula is to not do what I’ve done before and to (do just that) out do myself. That’s what keeps you learning, growing, and achieving goals. I always want to do something that’s not comparable to my previous works, which keeps it hot!

Jamaur: Tell us at MCP a little more about Sean, how did you get your start in the in this industry, and how did you end up penning some of the hits that we as listeners play over and over again daily?

Garrett: I got my start at 15 years old, that’s when I signed my first deal in Europe. I’m from ATL and (there) we’re all about music; my parents and M.L.K really inspired me. There’s allot of triumph and honest vibes coming out of Atlanta, its bread some of the greats, from Outkast to TLC. Ultimately, my parents gave me freedom in music by having me perform in shows and listening to different styles of music.

Jamaur: Recently Brooklyn Rap Legend Jay-Z dubbed you Sean “The Pen” Garrett, talk about how you received that name and if it has put any pressure on you to crank out even more stellar hits now that you’ve been trade marked as “one of the top writers in the industry?”

Garrett: Absolutely, it was a blessing. Out of the many rappers out there, Jay-Z is one of my favorite 2 or, and having him give me that name came with a lot of responsibility. He is thorough, history, and incredible with a pen and he’s done it for eight summers in a row! Shout out to Jay for that!

Jamaur: Of all of the songs that you’ve penned, what was your favorite and why?

Garrett: My favorites would have to be the songs that I wrote for my own debut album, ‘Turbo 9-1-9.’ My album has been compared to the greatest albums of it’s time. My first single, “Grippin” is no indication to where I’ll go, and my next two singles will defiantly mean game time. I’ve also been blessed with Usher’s “Yeah” and Beyonce’s “Ring the Alarm,” the ground breakers that I’ve done with ‘B’ where (at first) over some people’s heads. I’m also very appreciative to have worked with Enrique Inglesias. I also loved working with Mary on “No More Crying,” I really appreciate her struggle. I’m like Kanye, I’m not in a box and I don’t care where people try to put me. I want to give my fans something to look forward to; because, if there is nothing to look forward to, then why are you living? I do this for the fans.

Jamaur: Well Sean we here at MCP are all about the exclusive, so tell us a little something about you that some of your fans and those in the industry might not know about Mr. Garrett?

Garrett: Wow! That’s a good question; I’m a private dude I really don’t give out all of them speakers (Laughs). People might not know how much I live life and my community. I’m always trying to give back to my community and mentor, when I’m outside of the studio; I’m always trying to encourage families and children.

Jamaur: Well Sean, I just want to say that it was such a pleasure to speak to the man that I’ve unknowingly admired for years. I feel like I’ve lived through your music, from the dramatic “If” by Beyonce to Chris Brown’s club banger “Wall to Wall,” I always find myself singing and grooving to something you wrote. Sean, you are such an inspiration and even more than that, you are an impact on the music industry. We at MCP thank you for giving us the hits that we can count on.

Garrett: Absolutely. I want to thank Middle Child Promotions for being supportive of my career and recognizing a true “Hard Head.”

Jamaur: You’re more than welcome Sean, and we wish you much success on your debut ‘Turbo 9-1-9,’ and hope to talk with you as soon as it hits the streets, we know it’s going to blaze!

Garrett: Thank you man, I’ll talk to you guys soon.

Jamaur: Good-bye, God Bless!
