Darien Brockington: “Somebody To Love”
A Voice To Remember
Album Review By Nfared
Maybe you’ve heard of him, maybe you haven’t. Maybe you’ve heard him, maybe you haven’t. Rest assured though, when Darien Brockington opens his mouth, if you’re in the room, you won’t forget it, and if you’re not in the room, someone will soon tell you about him. Though he has not earned the “household name” status of some other mainstream R&B artist, his debut album “Somebody To Love” holds the promise of an artist that is about to step into some major success.
The subtle “Think It Over” produced by 9th wonder, is somewhere between friends and being in love as Darien relays somewhat mockingly, “True love is what we got right here/but we say we’re just friends”. He realizes the delicacy of the situation he is an as he admits, “I don’t want to make this love uncomfortable, but it’s you that I want…” On another end of the spectrum, “Don’t Say Goodbye” is about the mistake of rushing with “It felt a lot like love/but it was way to soon to be love/I failed to get to know you…” the writing clicks perfectly as he realizes things have gone to fast, but tries to hold on in the chorus, “Please baby don’t say goodbye/I never meant to make you cry…” The album standout, “I Miss You” is moving and romantic all the way down to the makeshift thunderstorm at the beginning. Darien ’s confident tenor and heartfelt confessions like, “What’s important to me/it don’t matter/without you” make the ballad an instant classic. The love struck “Crazy” is that moment where reality hits like a rock at the realization that the relationship is over. Darien is in painful in denial, “Broken inside, still I ignore it/love brought inside/won’t let me show it/I’ve been here once before…” and in spite of himself admits in the chorus, “I’m crazy bout you baby/I don’t know what you did”. The album ends with a song fitting for love, and perhaps, fitting for life as sang in the chorus, “We got to get back/to that place where/love is/all we’ll ever need”
Needle Meter
R&B needs Darien Brockington. The younger generation has Chris Brown and Trey Songz, but for the old school heads and for those that like raw jaw dropping vocals, Darien Brockington is the answer. His singing ability is unbelievably precise; Darien is definitely in control of his flow and sings with the intent of a heat seeking missile. He tackles ever angle of love as if he has been through each one and he has no fear in sharing all the details, good, bad or indifferent. You may not know who he is, but once you find out, you won’t soon forget. FIVE NEEDLES! CLASSIC ALBUM!!!!!
