J. Holiday - Back Of My Lac
After receiving a lukewarm response with his first single, Be With Me, R&B newcomer J. Holiday tried his luck again with the late summer heater, Bed, and has since become one to watch out for, generating great excitement for his debut album, Back Of My Lac, in the process. So how does it hold up?
One thing J. Holiday has going for him is his swagger and his refreshing approach to "Street Soul". His vocals are strong and he is clearly a face for R&B, but with being a guy from the streets, we do have to deal with the constant references to weed and sex throughout the album. However, songs like Bed, Suffocate, Fatal and Come Here, make it evident that he clearly shines more on the love songs than he does on the more street-edged tracks like Thug Commandments, which is noble in concept but falls short lyrically. The plus side about the album is that it's not overloaded with hip-hop features and doesn't hop across so many genres like most debut albums seem to do these days.
While he hasn't quite exactly proven his worth as the self-proclaimed "Savior of Male R&B", fans of “Bed" and those looking for some solid male R&B to indulge in should give “Back of My Lac" a listen. Just don't expect too much from the average. Rating 3 of 5 stars
