Jill Scott- The Real Thing: Words and Sounds, Vol. 3

Who is? Yeah Right

An Album Review By Nfared

When Jill Scott first started making noise years ago, she was rolling with the phrase, “Who is Jill Scott?” Four hit albums and a movie later, and rest assured that question is being asked by very few. Just in case though, Jill is still making music (no matter how quiet her releases are) with her latest project “The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Volume 3” in stores now.

Jill shows some versatility on the rockish sounding Vidal/Dre produced “The Real Thing”. Ever the writer, she is clever from jump with “You gotta do right by me/it’s mandatory baby/sweeter than your favorite ice cream/bask-in my glory baby…” The thought provoking lyrics continue with the powerful “Hate On Me”. It’s fun listening to Jill ponder questions that she already knows the answer to; “If I could give you the world/on a silver platter/would it even matter/you’d still be mad at me.” She then dismisses the hatred in her life by simply letting people be who they are; “Hate on me hater/now or later/cause I’m gonna do me…” Jill is confident in her ability with the silky “My Love”, and makes no qualms about it in the chorus; “My love is deeper/tighter/sweeter/higher/flyer/didn’t you know this/or didn’t you notice.” Jill posses probably the ultimate question on “How It Make You Feel”. “What if poof, every black female in the world disappeared?” Get it? Great. Touching on the pain of being in a one sided relationship, with “Whenever You’re Around”, Jill says probably one of the most painful things a person can say to the person they care about, “Cause I’m lonely, whenever you’re around.”

Needle Meter

Jill Scott has become one of music’s most loves artists. Her voice can go from smooth and innocent to forceful and demanding in one stanza, and her lyrics are always thoughtful and creative. With that in mind it is hard for Jill to disappoint; however, this album feels like it is missing something. It’s hard to say exactly what that is, and this is in no way to say that the listen is not enjoyable. It could be that “Beautifully Human” was so good it set the stage for an incredible future solo album. No worries though, Jill is still good for the soul. Needle Meter: Four Needles
