Warming up the stage is newcomer J. Holiday. If you’re not on time you will miss his set. He soulfully shook the stage with songs from his debut album “Back of My Lac” including Be With Me, Suffocate and Bed. He also covered the classic R&B tune, Breaking My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes) by Mint Condition. It wasn’t the hottest day in Atlanta, but by the end of J’s set he was left standing in only a wife beater while holding a bottled water.
Next to hit the stage was Keyshia Cole. She hit the stage in a silver short set with jacket and knee high boots and super blonde hair. The beat for Didn’t I Tell You begin to play as her five male dancers, two female background vocalist and live band set the scene for her entrance. She immediately went into her current single Shoulda Let You Go which features her artist Amina. Amina hit the stage to perform her rap, but was clearly lippin and messed up horribly because her vocals were going before she started. In an attempt to recover she looked to be heading back offstage, but I guess she remembered it was a concert and returned to finish her verse. Keyshia then served the crowd with some favorites from her debut Just Want It To Be Over, I Should’ve Cheated and Give It Up To Me (her feature on Sean Paul’s record). After performing the title track to her sophomore, Just Like You, she sang her heart out on her very first single I Changed My Mind. Continuing with her new material she served us with single number three, I Remember before capping it the show off with Love, Last Night and Let It Go. Missy Elliott surprised the crowd by joining Keyshia onstage and hyping the crowd with the famous hook! “DAMN THAT’S HOT!”
NeYo was the next artist on the bill to serve the crowd with all of his hits. Opening up with So Sick, Do You and Sexy Love. What had to have been the most exciting part (and most sexual) was when he did fan favorites Mirror, Addicted and Say It. After teasing the crowd, he performed Not Thinkin Bout U, Go On Girl and Can We Chill before closing his set with Make It Work and All Because Of You. Vocally NeYo is great, but sometimes he show seemed to drag a little.
And what was supposed to be the highlight of the night fell short with me. The King of R&B hit the stage set up like a boxing ring in his CHAMP robe before opening his set with That's That. Of course R. Kelly has thousands of hits so he gave us many snippets of songs like Hotel, Snake, Strip for You and R&B Thug. There were only a few songs he did in full such as When A Woman’s Fed Up and Feeling On Your Booty. I did get excited when he performed Seems Like You’re Ready and Slow Dance. You could hear several people begging for his 12 Play era to come to live, but he seemed to stick with his current material which has him portrayed much like a rapper as he walked back and forth swearing and cursing with every other word. I guess the show ran a little long because most people begin to get up and leave before his set was complete. I wish R. Kelly would sing like he used to and quit trying to be so hard about everything. He did thank the crowd for supporting him through his struggles and their love over the span of his career.
In theory, this is supposed to be the hottest show of the fall. However, the show dragged in spots and could have been so much better. Rating B-
